The general guideline for data recovery is to stop all disk activity
immediately after data has been deleted, and use a software application such
as FinalData to recover the data. The more time that elapses between the deletion
and the recovery process, the greater chance that the deleted data will be overwritten.
Since the operating system sees the sectors where the deleted
data used to reside as available (empty space), there
is no way of telling how much and how soon the data will be overwritten.
One of the main factors is the amount of disk activity during
this period. If the drive was being defragmented on a regular
basis, prior to the data loss, the chances of recovery increase.
