Question:

Is it safe to download the FinalData demo or full version, knowing that there is deleted data on the hard drive that needs to be recovered?

Answer:

No, to avoid overwriting the deleted data, it is strongly recommended not to write or save any data to the drive with the deleted data. This includes downloading any files or programs (including FinalData), uncompressing and installing programs to the affected drive.

We recommend using one of the following three options to avoid this issue:

  • Use an alternate drive:  If there is another hard drive present in your system (for example, drive D:), use it as the destination drive for downloading the setup file, and installing FinalData.
  • Use a CD-R drive:  For this step you will need a second system with a CD-R drive. See the below procedures.
  • Attach the affected drive to a different system:  Physically remove the affected drive (from system A), attach it to another computer (system B), with preferably the same operating system, and enough disk space to hold all your recovered data. Download, install and run the FinalData application on the hard drive of the second computer (system B). By default, FinalData prevents you from saving the recovered data to the same drive, so you will need to recover the data to the hard drive of system B.

Procedure:

Running FinalData from a CD-R drive (This example assumes that you have access to a different computer with a CD-R drive):

  • Download the FinalData demo or full version of the sofware to another computer with a CD-R drive.
  • Uncompress/unzip the "setup" file.
  • Run the FinalData setup application to install the software.
  • Copy the entire contents of the FinalData directory (typically located under "C:\Program files\FinalData") onto a CD-R.
  • On the affected machine, run the program by double-clicking the "FinalData.exe" program, from the CD-R.

Note: The program may perfrom slower if run from CD media.
